Spineless theft in Timperley
AN ELDERLY Timperley couple are furious after their 52-year-old cactus was stolen from their porch.
Hilary Barnes, 71, and husband Phil, 70, who live in Perry Road, bought the cactus in January 1956 a week before their wedding from Altrincham Market for one and nine pence.
Over the years the prickly plant grew from the size of an egg to six feet tall and was stolen off their front porch in what Hilary believes was a calculated theft in the middle of the night.
She said: "I am absolutely furious that someone would do this, when I realised I was livid and shocked, the first thing I did was put pen to paper and write to the Messenger.
"The cactus had a special significance for us it is the only thing we have kept over the years we have been married, It was so unique when we first bought it, It was part of or life and we never expected anyone to steal it - nothing is safe these days unless it is chained down."
Hilary can't understand how anybody could have moved the cactus as it was six feet tall, with four branches measuring two or three feet protruding from it.
"It was so large it had to be propped up against the wall, it is very cumbersome and was wrapped in bubble wrap to protect it from the frost - but someone whould have to be very strong to steal it - maybe there were a few of them with a van - I hope they prick themselves on the spines."
