Market Dave update: Second teenager arrested

A SECOND teenager has been arrested on suspicion of robbery in connection with a man who was found collapsed in Altrincham.
The 16-year-old boy from Broadheath was arrested today (May 8) and has been bailed until 19 June 2008 pending further inquiries after David O'Kell, known locally as Market Dave, was found unconscious in mysterious circumstances.
Earlier today police confirmed confirmed that Mr O'Kells' condition had improved.
Mr O'Kell is now stable but because of his age police said it will be a long process before he is able to make a full recovery.
Another 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of robbery on April 20 and has also been bailed until June 19.
At about 11.10pm on Wednesday April 9, police were informed that a passer-by who was walking along Huxley Street near Homebase had found Mr O'Kell, 67, lying in the bushes.
Officers attended and he was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital with a head injury. He was later transferred to Hope Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Inquiries later established that Mr O'Kell had been drinking in the Railway pub in Broadheath earlier on.

He is unable to tell police how he sustained his injuries and police are continuing to try and trace anyone who may have seen him at about the time he collapsed to establish what happened.
In particular, officers want to speak to three youths who were seen running along Princess Street from the direction of Huxley Street at about 11.00pm.
Detective Sergeant Andy Reynolds, from Trafford CID, said: "At this stage, we still do not know what happened or how the victim sustained his injuries. There were no witnesses or CCTV and there remains some mystery as to exactly what did happen.
"We still want to hear from these youths because they could be valuable witnesses and they may be able to help piece together what happened that night.
"The victim has suffered quite a serious head injury and we are anxious to know what happened. I would appeal to anyone who can help to come forward."

Probably useless thugs that prowl the streets of Broadheath!
A Nice enough guy, bit strange but did no one any harm! His shoes were always shiny and clean, unlike some of the dirty scallies that live around there!

Dave is a harmless guy who dont do an harm to anyone. if the scallies round there did half the work this guy does in a day with his scrap cart it would kill them from exhaustion. a lot of people ,ike Dave so i dont think they will get away with it for long.

its about time broadheath had some visible police around, walking the beat, the estate is crawling with scum after dark nowadays.Its about time parents round here tokk some responsibility for their childrens upbringing rather than turfing them out on the street while they spend all night drinking or doing their drugs- this place has gone downhill BIG TIME over the years and we just let them get away with it.

I heard today that Dave died this morning in hospital. I hope it isn't true. He has his own fan club on You Tube. If Trafford had built the statue in front of the Town Hall that the people of Altrincham wanted (instead of some victorian nobody) at least he would have seen his legacy before he died. Shame on you Trafford Borough Council for not listening to what the public want Again!

THe council wanted to put up the statue but the family of dave wouldn't allow them to. It was bit sad...would of been great to have his statue.

What low life scum bags we have to share fresh air with, My son and wife were the victim of a road rage, the police took three month to attempt to arrest a person, if they had followed and stopped the car the driver was in they would have had him, the police think he was in a ringer, falce plates, i was hit in my car by a hit and run, no insurance apprently, run a red light hit my car and drove off, then you wonder why people take the law into their own hands, then they go to jail.

This incident is just another sad sign of the times.Where ever you live be it council estate or hale village, everywhere has em, little knob heads who want to be "hard men" and they think that attacking a pensioner while mob handed will give them a big man reputation. Well all I can hope for is they catch these little muppets and put them in a cell with a couple of real hard lads who will make their (not long enough) fifteen years, a living hell.
Everyone who drank in the same pubs as Dave will know he could be a pain at times but I am sure that most of them would also agree that he was not deserving of this.

Alty will have lost something if he is dead, he lives 500 yards from my house and on the one occaision i spoke to him i found him to be very pleasant and there was more to him than meets the eye.
My dad is over 60 and he can remember him pushing the cart around since god knows when!

Broadheath always had it's scrotes but everyone knew who they were, theres so many knocking round the estate now that have come in from elsewhere and have ruined what used to be an o.k. place to live, just drive up Craven road, Princes street, Lee avenue - you can pick 'em out of a crowd.

Had to go and raise a glass to a true local character in the Malt Shovels. Once the shock and disgust had passed everyone had a tale to tell, a story to celebrate a wonderful eccentric in the midst of suburban mediocrity. Apparently three mediocre suburban morons saw fit to remove some colour from Altrincham life, through the pathetic jealousy of having no colour in their own lives. How very sad that such a materially wealthy area could produce such emptiness, such vehement rage at one who dared to be different , such a ridiculous level of boredom that murder passes as entertaintment. The parents of these spoiled children now know them as killers ; their 'friends' know them as psychopaths; the whole of Altrincham knows them as small boys who have made a grave mistake - and who would be wise to give themselves into police custody.
Enough of the 'perpetrators'.
God bless you Dave for your part in a town and a life that seems to be less than it was, and enjoy your next adventure.

i'm so sorry to hear about dave and what has happened. I work on the broadheath retail park and have done for 3 years, over recent months it has been getting worse and worse for youths constantly terrorising us and neighbours. im so sorry to hear it has come to this. time and time again we have had contacted the police and told them about the events that have happened on the retail park and still to this day we do not get anything done about any of the young people on the broadheath estate. Parents of these individuals need to take control of their own and not let things like this happen anymore!!![bold]bold[/bold]

My earlier reply was in comment to 'Nicola'. Altrincham and all surrounding areas have 'scallies' and not all of them live on council estates, i myself do so that does not make me a snob!!! But i agree with 'The Axeman' & 'Hughsey' and the comments they have made. If these yobs think that this makes them 'Hardlads' they can think again!! The worry and grief that Daves family have gone through over the last few days beggers belief, and i would'nt wish that on my worst enemy, i just hope that Dave recovers from this because i know that some in Altrincham will find it very hard knowing that a decent, hard working, OAP!! has had the S**t knocked out of him while whoever did it has got away with it, someone knows who they are!! At this stage, it is not really known whether Dave has survived. I hope the mindless, cowardly scum that assaulted Dave are caught and given the max sentence! Unlike them, Dave worked hard all his life. I remember him from me bein a kid of 8 right thru to present time. I always admired his individuality and tenacity. God Bless Dave and his family.

This is very sad news, but it would be helpful if someone could clarify whether Dave has actually passed away or not. This country has gone to the dogs and people losing their lives to yob attacks is now common place. The Great has gone out of Britain.

Glad to hear he's not dead, lets hope he makes a full recovery. As for the 'must be from a council estate' comments, what amazing bigotry and ignorance. I live on the Broadheath estate, and yes, lots of the youths wear hoodies etc, but its the fashion. A small, very small, number of idiots exist, the vast majority of youths on this estate may be loud but are harmless and often well mannered. Street crime is a problem in our society, prejudice through ignorance is another. I accept we have some idiots, but lets not tar all the youths of Broadheath with the same brush. And before you judge me, I'm not some left wing softy, I do believe the perpetrators of this crime should get the maximum punishment available. Get well soon Dave.

The situation in Broadheath is indicative of the problems caused by the failings of Trafford Council Housing department, in dealing with this sort of antisocial and criminal behaviour.
I have first hand knowledge of these failings, and could write a book on the terrible effects their failings have on the majority of law-abiding citizens.
There seems to be a streak of incompetence which runs through the department, starting with the housing office, and running through to the director of housing.
Unfortunately no-one seems to want to be accountable for these failings.

I'd even go as far to say that he is held in great affection by the majority of the towns residents...he's a true british eccentric. Anyway, I think the point to this story is that thee types of people should be helped and not held up as some type of lovable community asset. The man clearly has mental health issues and needs treatment in a special medical environment.

I rememeber Dave from when I was a kid and iam nearly 40 now, he was always a legend dancing with the buskers in Town. Dave has had one of the hardest lives I know of a friend of mine is a relation to Dave and he is the way he is because of a traumatic experience that was inflicted upon him when he was a small boy by some American Pilots.He has always been different and I for one think the World and Alty would be a sad place without the guy we grew up knowing as Daft Dave. I believe that the clear up rate for catching these people is getting worse ,despite what politicians are saying ,in the last week 2x hit and runs this assault at least three armed robberies where people have been harmed and all within 10 mile radius

I was so saddened to hear this news- a hard working old guy earning an honest living. David is one of the characters of Altrincham and would be sadly missed. [bold]I would like the Messenger Newspaper to set up a donation fund so that I and I'm sure many other local residents could send David a little money to help him in his recovery[/bold] . Yeah cuz the issue of an old man being attacked on our own doorstep means that we should all talk about where the scum might come from doesn't it!!!

T he police still do not seem to know what happened to him yet, maybe we are jumping to conclusions. It could be a simple accident.
Its best we do not speculate just yet.
If hes on the mend, he will soon be able to tell the police what has happened.

An amazing kind man, friendly and would chat to anyone. A legend in this community for many years. Hope is gets well very soon and gets back to pushing his beloved Dave-Mobile. These low life teens should be dealt with severly, low life scum, i blame the parents, letting their feral children roam the streets at late hours drinking and smoking.

[bold]bold[/bold] Dave comes on the bus station every night and and was proud to show me his new free bus pass this was only last Tuesday he pulled my clip on tie off for a joke as i am the Supervisor on the Station he is a great guy and many times i have got the local yobs to leave him alone ive worked here five years and Dave is Mr Altrincham to me,get well fella i want to see you back here soon with your new shoes on and you new bus pass.

market dave. david okell is my dads uncle. he was attacked. hit over the head with a plank. had his wallet a watch n check books stollen. he is recovering but he's still in a bad state.

Idon,t actually know the man,but i travel to altrincham quite a lot.Igot that used to seeing him pushing his cart i actually start to watch out for him on my way up there.There is no respect for anyone anymore!When they are caught they will just laugh at the courts theres no fear any more because they know their punishment will be a joke! I hate the chavs that hang around streets. Who has the RIGHT tho batter someone up especially in the state that Market Dave is in. He works long hours picking up scrap metal and he gets assulted. Comon England do somthing about it!!!![bold]bold[/bold]
