ALTRINCHAM'S latest landmark has been unveiled - a life size bronze statue of a Victorian market trader.

The Mayor, Cllr Bernard Sharp, took the wraps off the 2.4m figure at a ceremony outside Altrincham Town Hall.

The £35,000 'Market Trader ' figure is the work of renowned Altrincham sculptor Colin Spofforth The project, to celebrate Altrincham's status as an historic charter market town, was developed by Altrincham Town Centre Partnership and has been in the pipeline for a decade.

It is hoped that it will be the first step in creating a 'sculpture trail' through the town centre.

Funding for the artwork has been provided by businesses and developers and an arts and business Government grant.

Before the unveiling, the Court Leet led a procession through the town centre.

What a superb waste of tax payers money. No wonder the council tax bill keeps rising when its being spent on tut like this.

Rubbish...trafford council should not be wasting our money on this type of garbage. If they've got too much money give it back to tax payers.

There obviously isnt a credit crunch in trafford council then. Wile the council tax rises and families struggle to make ends meet what do we get ....a £35,000 statue, just a touch inappropriate i think.

The Altrincham Town Centre Partnership should be ashamed of themselves. Whilst the heart is being ripped out of Altrinchams small business community, they spend £35,000 on something that has no benefit to anyone. Get real or get out!

I don't see anywhere that it is stated that taxpayers paid for this. Arts funding as I understand it is given for a specific reason or project.
I agree that much more needs to be done in Altrincham- Stamford New Road needs finishing, Small traders need more support, businesses need to be encouraged to stay in the area or move into the area. Perhaps it would be helpful if the town centre partnership shared it's vision & action plans. Works of art can be loved & hated in equal parts but a delapidated ghost town centre full of empty units, charity shops & bars will be despised by all

Altrincham Resident- Where do you think government grants come from? surely you dont think they have a whip round in the house of commons do you?

I am just wondering if this is the first step how much the other steps are going to cost and can someone identify the purpose of this statue and who it is? A Victorian Trader !!!! I agree that in the current climate that a tribute to Market Dave would be more appropriate and have a greater impact on the environment and it's community.
