AN Urmston man and his brother-in-law are training hard in preparation for a 10km run to raise money for charity.
Chris Fitzpatrick of Bowfell Road and Terry Gardiner from Wigan will participate in the Great Manchester Run this Sunday, May 18 to gather funds for Chris's son Liam, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a genetic disorder that weakens the muscles.
Seven-year-old son Liam was diagnosed with DMD in April 2006. The condition affects one in 3,500 boys, and occasionally girls, and stops the body from producing dystrophin, a protein necessary for muscle strength and function.
Mum Sandra said: "Liam is currently to all intents and purposes a normal boisterous little boy and doesn't yet know anything about DMD other than his legs get tired sometimes, but his condition will gradually take over and he will require more and more help to get around."
Chris and Terry, who is Liam's godfather, are taking part in the run to raise as much money as possible for the charity Action Duchenne, which is campaigning for funding for research into treatments, and is raising awareness of the disease.
