Everything from your local knitting club to charities, childcare nurseries to yoga classes in Trafford can now be found at a click of a button. A new online database listing hundreds of community groups has been launched at www.trafford.gov.uk/communitygroups. Local groups can raise their profile and reach a wider audience by promoting their presence on the internet, through Trafford Council's new online community database. As well as providing key information about the group such as meeting times, venues and contact details the facility can be used to recruit volunteers, available 24 hours a day from any location with access to the internet. Visit www.trafford.gov.uk/communitygroups if you want to add your organisation to the database. If you don't have your own internet you can access it for free at any Trafford library. Just ask a member of staff for details.

You will all be aware of the new kerbside recycling and waste service that’s rolling out across Trafford and early results are showing that local people are championing it. In one week, over 50 tonnes of paper and card - the weight of around nine elephants - was collected from 7,000 properties in Partington, Flixton and Urmston. That’s a massive increase from the 12 tonnes of paper collected during the last week of the old service from those same properties. For more information about the new service, visit www.trafford.gov.uk/recycling With nights getting colder people will be getting their electric blankets out of the cupboard. Trading standards are offering free electric blanket testing for all Trafford residents this Friday (3 October) at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Stretford.

Did you know that everyone who recycles aluminium drinks cans and foil in Trafford is helping grow fruit trees in Malawi? In the past year we have all contributed to growing 113 grafted orange trees for families in rural Malawi, and the more we recycle, the more fruit trees will be grown. The tree nurseries are run by local garden clubs and schools, which have been growing guava and pawpaw as well as the local lemon rootstock used for grafting the improved fruit species - a new introduction to the area.

We’re putting climate change firmly on the council’s agenda by setting up a select committee to focus our work and raise awareness. The new committee will ensure the council considers the impact of our services and policies on climate change and the local environment. It will also be raising awareness of what local people can do.
